Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is a water-soluble vitamin that is flushed out of the body daily, so it must be restored each day. Riboflavin-derived coenzymes, FMN and FAD are cofactors of numerous enzymes involved in oxidation-reduction reactions. Several of these enzymes are involved in the process of energy transduction. It plays a key role in breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats to produce energy. It is important both for the energy-producing electron transport chain and the metabolism of fat molecules into chemically useful energy. Riboflavin is also involved in antioxidant activity, being a cofactor for the enzymes like glutathione reductase and is required for the metabolism of other vitamins like vitamin B6, niacin and vitamin K.
